Do you have unwelcome intrusions in your back door? Would you even know if you did? With home networks becoming more advanced at a break neck speed, its wise to have some understanding of the data that is passing back and forth at any given moment through you’re home system. Luckily, there is help for those of us that do not necessarily understand the exact complexities of routers, firewalls, and servers.
If you are like me and have a multitude of computers hooked into your home network, you most likely have a small robust server running your home network. If you don’t thats ok, you’ll get there in time. With the placement of a server comes the threat of an outside attack. Your network is exposed to the outside world, even if you have a firewall, for however long its connected to your service providers line in. In most cases this means a 24×7x365 connection time to the outside. With this type of setup you are certain to need some defensive, network attack tools, and some good luck. Network attack tools let you get in depth with your network to see whats really going on in real time.
I’ve recently installed Net/FSE, which runs on Linux, to gather information on my network alerts. Typically you receive alerts from various programs that are running without much context to them. Net/FSE allows you to see in much more detail the information associated with those errors. In the event of a network attack, you need to be able to act quickly. This tool allows you to do so. Its a free download for a limited time I believe, so go get a copy and test it out. They’ve got a demo online as well if you’re interested in seeing what it can really do.
You can never be too careful with home servers and networks. Most of us aren’t sercurity experts, but you can certainly do your part and learn more about how to protect your server and network.
