Super Suck Sunday

Ok so let me get this out of the way first, I'm a Patriots fan, and now I'm in depression. With that said the Giants played an outstanding game and they deserve the glory for sure. On super bowl sunday there are really two games played, one being football, and the other being the marketing campaigns. This years crop of commercials aimed at consumers was on a whole decidedly boring and in some cases a complete waste of millions of dollars.
Several commercials stepped up to the plate and hit a home run, but they were few and far between. The first ad that I thought conveyed its message extremely well was the Audi commercial for its new car. Of course it certainly helps to have a ridiculously hot car that will sell itself, but the commercial was well put together in its own right. The beginning of the commercial as a reference to the Godfather was a bit stretched and only people who have seen the Godfather movies several times over would understand the correlation, but once you got past the intro the commercial punches you in the face with an extremely sexy car that sells itself. The camera work on this particular commercial was very elegantly done, especially with the opening sequence of the car face on focusing on the headlights. It all goes back to one simple statement:
Sex sells.
Not only is this true of sex appeal for fashion and design, its true in the auto industry. This new Audi is extremely sexy, albeit pricey. I give the commercial a 4 out of 5 Super Suck Sunday points.
On the other side of the coin, where crap lives, we find the animated commercials for Sales Genie. I'm not entirely sure what drugs the design team were smoking when they put these cannon fodder commercials together, but it must have been something strong. While cartoons might appeal to a severely younger audience, the beer drinking sports fan most likely used this sixty second opportunity to relieve himself at the closest bathroom. Time well spent I say. These commercials seemed to be poorly written, and have little imagination in regards to viewer intelligence. Granted it got the point across, but did so with very little flare or style. I give the entire Sales Genie commercial collection a whopping 1 out of 5 Super Suck Sunday points.
After the debacle that was Sales Genie, I was refreshed to see a Doritos ad that had potential, and I don't mean the contest winner that got a musical spot for a commercial. Gag me already with that. The Doritos Mouse commercial was clever, funny, and unexpected. Taking a spin on the cat and mouse game of waiting for the mouse to come through a wall, the unexpected person in a mouse suit coming through the wall with a football tackle practically made me choke on my wings. Attetion grabbing, and effective, the Doritos mouse commercial grabs a 5 out of 5 Super Suck Sunday points for being creative, funny, and simple all at the same time while maintaining the ability to clearly advertise the cheesy goodness.
