Return This, Biotch

mail return labelPosted June 10, 2008

I’m always on the look out for new ways to simply and effectively advertise myself or whatever product website I happen to be promoting at any given time. So this nifty little trick happened to catch my eye the other day while I was sifting through the pounds of mail that I get on a daily basis. And by mail, I mean real actual physical mail from the mailbox, not email.

Now I know about half of you just took a deep huff and sighed at the sight of the word real mail, but bare with me here as real mail isn’t as dead as you might think it has been. Far from it, real mail has been thinned down so much by the advent of cheap spam emails that to promote via the post office is again becoming a great way to target perspective buyers.

This nifty little trick has been in my bag of fun ideas for awhile, but until recently I hadn’t had the time to try it out. Well suffice it to say I’m an idiot for not doing it sooner. I normally send out physical mailings to a prospective list of people every month for certain products, as well as mail various companies with proposals, and friends and family etc. That being said I do a fair amount of mailing. One of the worst things about doing a ton of mailing is writing the return address on every single freaking piece of mail going out.

Well this time I took a little extra time and got some nice cheap address labels printed up - but I did it with a catch. Instead of putting my own info on there I decided to put this website address. I’ve listed below how it looks on the label:

www.interwebhunt.com
PO Box 4
NY, NY 10124

Obviously I’ve changed the actual address to a fake one, but you get the point! Pay also close attention to the way in which the colors were printed on the label. Making use of a bold red first line and dull grayed out second lines forces the readers eye to look at the first line and read it. Think of how many people will see this particular label on whatever journey it goes on. The postman, the letter sorter in the office mail room, the secretary, the end user. Thats at least four people on a single five cent return label. Not necessarily a bad option here.

Another great part of having labels like this printed up is that you can stick them anywhere - and by that I mean subway posting boards, college campuses, street poles, buildings etc etc. The possibilities are really limited only by your imagination. A great way to entice people is to fore go the actual return address and print something juicy like - Win $500 - you get the point!

So go try it out damn it!
